The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is a pan-African center of excellence for rice research, development and capacity building. It contributes to poverty reduction, ensuring food and nutrition security and improving the livelihoods of farmers and other stakeholders in the rice value chain in Africa by increasing the productivity and profitability of rice-based agri-food systems, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources.

This position aims to ensure the success of the rice component of the FSRP project at a higher level. The main responsibilities of the research associate include formulating an annual work plan, ensuring the quality and effective management of field data. The role involves planning and utilizing existing financial and human resources for project activities, while providing regular updates to the team through mid-term and year-end reports. This position is critical to maintaining the high standards required for the success of the project.
Job Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the selected research associate will include the following:

  1. Breeding Program Support
     Assist in the planning, design, and execution of field and greenhouse breeding trials.
     Coordinate planting, field management, and evaluation of experimental plots, ensuring adherence to scientific protocols.
     Conduct selection and evaluation of new plant varieties with desired traits such as yield potential, stress tolerance, and disease resistance.
  2. Data Collection and Management
     Collect, record, and manage phenotypic and genotypic data from trials and experiments, ensuring accuracy and quality control.  Use statistical and selection software (e.g., R, SAS, Genstat) for data analysis and interpretation.
     Maintain accurate and organized records of all breeding activities, including test results, seeds
  3. Project Coordination and Reporting
  4.  Provide technical and administrative support for ongoing breeding projects, ensuring timely and efficient execution of project activities.
  5.  Prepare regular progress reports, data summaries and technical documents for internal and external use.
  6. for external stakeholders.
  7.  Contribute to project proposals, scientific publications and presentations at professional meetings
  8. and conferences.
  9. Capacity Building and Awareness
     To train and supervise research assistants, technicians, interns and visiting scientists in plant breeding techniques and data management.  Participate in the organization and facilitation of capacity building workshops and training programs for National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) and other stakeholders.
     Support awareness raising activities for farmers and extension agents, introducing them to new varieties and technologies.
  10. Collaboration and Networking
     Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of breeders, agronomists, and molecular scientists to achieve breeding objectives.
     Collaborate with national and international research institutions, universities, and donor agencies on joint breeding projects and initiatives.  Participate in regional and international conferences, seminars and knowledge exchange platforms.
     Based on research data obtained from various field trials, prepare a scientific article for publication.
  11. Respect institutional protocol for risk management and safety.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
    Qualifications/Selection Criteria
    Education: Holds a PhD in genetics, plant breeding, plant pathology, plant biology, molecular biology, or a related field.
    Required professional experience and key skills:
     Knowledge and experience in rice production
     Excellent communication and collaboration skills, self-motivation, and willingness to learn new skills and techniques.
     Ability to design experiments, initiate research projects, and participate effectively in team projects.
     Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.  Experience in performing statistical analysis and/or knowledge of rice breeding concepts

Education:
A relevant degree in social sciences or a related field (e.g., international development, public health, evaluation, statistics or economics, evaluation or a related field). Required Skills and Experience:
At least five (2) years of progressively responsible experience in designing, managing and implementing results-based RME activities. Hands-on experience in collecting qualitative and quantitative data
Experience in field research and evaluation for a donor-funded project is an asset. Hands-on knowledge in collecting data for research. Experience in conducting assessments, data collection, document/data review, transcribing survey recordings, and writing narrative reports. Specific experience with ODK and Microsoft Office suites. Experience in data analysis (for data quality sources)
Well-developed interpersonal skills in communication and relationship building. Good people management skills and excellent verbal communication skills
Ethics of telephone communication. Ability to listen, adapt, persuade to respond. Language Requirements:
Each candidate must be proficient in the following languages:
English: written and spoken

Required Qualifications and Experience

Ability to effectively manage competing project deadlines in a high-pressure work environment with varying degrees of supervision.
