AFS Global STEM Academies combines digital and in-person learning, bringing together young people from 16 countries around the world where scholars enrich their sustainability knowledge and STEM skills through an interactive, hands-on curriculum while developing essential global skills, including problem-solving, analytical skills, cross-cultural understanding, and social innovation.
The academies begin with a 12-week online (at-home) virtual learning program that includes global skills, social impact, and sustainability-focused workshops, with content developed by AFS and the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania. . The virtual portion of the program culminates in student-led social impact projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real-world challenges, with a focus on sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including the topics of climate change and energy transition. After completing the virtual program, Academy members embark on a 4-week immersive experience in one of the Academy’s destinations: Brazil, China, Egypt, or India. Academy programming focuses on essential STEM skills and cross-cultural understanding for global sustainability, as well as local cultural immersion. Fellows participate in community service and have the opportunity to visit innovative, sustainability-focused local operations to see firsthand how businesses and organizations are applying STEM skills to address industrial and societal challenges, including sustainability.
Fellows in the program earn the Advanced Certificate in Global Competency for Social Impact, awarded by AFS and the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania. BP, a global energy company, provides funding to support these exchanges.
