Applications are now open for the 2025 edition of the Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment, named after Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the first woman in the world to be democratically elected as a head of state. President of Iceland from 1980 to 1996, Vigdís is a renowned champion of women’s rights.
Launched in May 2023 in partnership with the Government of Iceland, the award recognises outstanding individuals, civil society groups, or organisations that promote women’s empowerment in all their diversity. It rewards achievements in gender equality, equal participation in decision-making, and initiatives fostering inclusive policies and practices.
Nominations (for individuals or organisations) must be submitted by 28 March 2025 via the online forms available on the prize website (https://pace.coe.int/en/pages/vigdisprize) which also provides further information.
