Reasons to Consider Applying for a Scholarship

Published

on

In many nations, obtaining a higher education can be a costly endeavor. The blend of tuition costs, accommodation, daily living expenses, and student debt often intimidates numerous parents and students who believe they cannot finance a degree. However, the positive aspect is that despite high university costs, there is an extensive array of scholarships available for every type of student to pursue.

  1. Make education more accessible According to U.S. News and World Report, in 2020, annual tuition in the United States increased from $11,171 at public universities to $41,411 at private universities. Many students are discouraged by these high prices, but receiving financial aid through a scholarship can provide students with opportunities that they would not otherwise have access to. Having a scholarship allows a student to consider a more selective program, reduces the risk of dropping out, and often provides opportunities to broaden their academic experience through internships or study abroad programs.
  2. They benefit from considerable support Many universities offer significant financial support to deserving students. This means that in addition to receiving the scholarship, you will also be guided by a specialist from your university to use it as best as possible. This mentoring can be of great help to first-year students, who will benefit from expert advice on how to properly manage all the benefits of the scholarship.
  3. They help you expand your network
Start networking long before you even know what the concept means. Your group of friends at school, the professors you’ve connected with, your online friends who share the same interests as you… they’re all part of your network. Being in college allows you to intentionally start making more professional connections.
A scholarship will allow you to attend college events and participate in activities that will prove to be valuable networking opportunities. Receiving a scholarship also gives you access to a unique network: the community of alumni recipients. Meeting people in your field of study who share your experience can be very beneficial in your future.
  4. Scholarships allow you to focus on your studies
For many students, finding a part-time job is the best, if not the only, way to finance their education. However, when your job is around 15 hours a week, focusing on your studies and graduating on time becomes difficult. If you have a scholarship, you will be able to fully dedicate yourself to your studies. Not having to work while studying will significantly reduce student burnout, which will significantly reduce the likelihood of dropping out.
  5. They help boost your CV
Having an impressive CV is essential to get started in the job market after graduation. Scholarships are exceptional and prestigious awards, often based on merit, meaning they are only awarded to students with a very satisfactory academic record. Scholarships and the opportunities they offer boost your academic and professional profile, and having such a standout item on your CV is sure to impress recruiters and employment services.
  6. They encourage philanthropy
Organizations that offer you scholarships aren’t just interested in funding your education. They also want you to discover how their investment can help you make a positive impact in the world. These institutions often encourage (and sometimes require) their award-winning students to participate in volunteer work and develop projects to apply their research in ways that strengthen the community around them. Having a scholarship is also a great opportunity to become more philanthropic, to think about those around you and how you can make a difference in their lives through your research.
  7. Provide access to more universities
Unfortunately, money is still a barrier to education. As a result, some university programs remain out of reach for many people. But students with low family incomes should not be prevented from pursuing higher education due to financial barriers. That is why scholarships play such an important role in the world of education: they help remove these barriers, make education accessible to all and increase diversity in higher education and, therefore, in the job market. When more people have access to a good education, the whole world benefits.
  8. They provide additional experience
Many scholarships also offer scholarship recipients excellent work and career opportunities. Having the opportunity to develop professionally from the beginning of your career will certainly allow you to be more successful in the job market. Some institutions also encourage you to participate in volunteer activities and be an agent of change in your community. Every professional experience is a valuable asset for your CV and above all they are valuable life experiences.
  9. Encourage Diversity
Scholarships aim to make college more accessible to those who would otherwise not have such opportunities. They do this by encouraging diversity in academic fields and helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue higher education. Many institutions offer scholarships exclusively to women, immigrants, international and domestic students, people with disabilities, and many other groups, helping to close the gap between disadvantaged students and higher education.
  10. Encourage Corporate Social Responsibility
Scholarships aren’t just offered by the government or universities. Many private companies are also committed to doing their part to change the world. A good example is the Live Más scholarship, a Taco Bell program launched in 2018.
The Live Más Scholarship awarded $7 million to 725 American students in 2021. To apply for this scholarship, you don’t need to worry about your GPA or resume. Taco Bell said it was looking for “all young people who are pursuing higher education and using their passion to create change in their communities and beyond.” »
Another great opportunity for students is the L’Oréal India Scholarship for Young Women in Science. The program is a partnership between L’Oréal and UNESCO and has benefited over 385 young women since 2003 to continue their studies in scientific fields at recognized higher education institutions in India.
