Dear EURAM member and friend,
I hope you will join us from 22 to 25 June 2025 at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Florence (Italy).
The theme of the EURAM conference is “Management with Purpose”:
The debate on the concept of corporate purpose, from both an academic and a practical perspective, is flourishing. At the heart of this debate is the notion of balance between the pursuit of profit and the maintenance of a meaningful and lasting purpose. Shareholder value theory has clearly demonstrated the limits of focusing on profit maximization. Stakeholder theory has served to draw attention to the value of the voices of other stakeholders, but has focused much of its attention on comparing and balancing different interests. Today, identifying, articulating, and maintaining a meaningful, shared purpose has become a central challenge for many organizations. Business leaders are being encouraged to embrace the idea that businesses must go beyond the pursuit of profit. They must also create value by helping society provide new solutions to a growing number of challenges.
Management by purpose is a strategic hypothesis that creates value, enhances impact, and promotes longevity. It reflects something more ambitious than the pursuit of profit through economic exchange. It explains how people involved in the organization can make a difference, give meaning and gain their support. It’s about people coming together to do something they believe in and allowing profit to follow as a consequence of their collective efforts rather than being an end in itself. However, despite a growing body of research on this topic, many questions remain. How do you define purpose? How many reasons for being can have an organization? How do organizations come to understand their diverse internal and external stakeholders and what are the inherent trade-offs they make? There are no simple answers to these questions. Researchers, managers, and organizations must work together to combine and share knowledge and co-create new models and approaches.
