The Mastercard Foundation envisions a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn and thrive. Through its Young Africa Works strategy and its Canadian EleV program, the Foundation works with partners to ensure that millions of young people, especially women, have access to quality education, financial services, and decent work. The Mastercard Foundation was created in 2006 through the generosity of Mastercard when it became a public company. The foundation is independent and has its own board of directors and CEO.
UNDERSTANDING FOUNDATION PROGRAMS IN CANADA
The foundation began working in Canada in partnership with Indigenous communities and post-secondary institutions to better listen, learn, and understand how we can take meaningful action. The EleV Strategy was developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities, youth and partners to enable 100,000 Indigenous youth to complete their education and transition into decent work, consistent with their values and aspirations. As reflected in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action, education is a key driver of improved socio-economic well-being. By partnering with Indigenous communities, we seek to expand our initiative to ultimately help support a generation of transformative young Indigenous leaders who will be agents of change in their communities. We believe that by setting a bold goal, we will encourage engagement across sectors and create a momentum that will increase the strengths and opportunities of Indigenous youth. Consistent with our approach, Indigenous communities and youth will be the drivers of this transformation. The program will foster innovations aimed at addressing long-term systemic changes to achieve economic prosperity and social well-being in indigenous communities.
The EleV team oversees existing and emerging partnerships related to indigenous education. In line with our overall vision and Youth Africa Works strategy, we will share lessons and opportunities for connection through the Foundation’s work. While we operate in diverse contexts, the centrality of youth voice and vision, the affirmation of culture and identity, and the priority given to strengthening community capacity for self-determination are common themes in which our work is strengthened and enhanced.
UNDERSTANDING THE AFRICA FOUNDATION PROGRAMS
These are exciting times at The Mastercard Foundation as we accelerate the implementation of the Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to enable 30 million young people across Africa to access decent and full employment. To ensure the Foundation’s accessibility to our partners and program participants, we have established offices in Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Uganda. These offices provide strong in-country support for the implementation of Young Africa Works. We work with governments, the private sector, educators, and other donors to improve the quality of education and skills training, equip young people with the skills they need to enter the labor market, expand access to financial services for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and facilitate connections between job seekers and attractive job opportunities.
Our values serve as guiding principles, transcending and dominating all other considerations. We warmly encourage you to bring your bold ideas, curiosity, and expertise to your work.
