Fellowship: Human Rights Defender

The European Parliament Sakharov Fellowship offers 14 selected human rights defenders from third countries the opportunity to follow an intensive two-week training in Brussels and at the Global Human Rights Campus in Venice. This capacity-building programme for human rights defenders has been organised annually since 2016 following an initiative taken by the Sakharov Prize community during the Sakharov Prize 25th anniversary conference.
As part of the Sakharov Fellowship training programme, human rights defenders
· improve their understanding of European and international human rights frameworks, policies and mechanisms;
· develop their capacities to advocate and bring about positive changes for the protection of human rights. Beyond training, Sakharov Scholars
· contribute to the development of the Sakharov Scholars network to share best practices, disseminate knowledge gained and increase awareness of the Sakharov Prize and the Sakharov community;
· will have the opportunity to keep in touch with the work of the European Parliament and continue to be in touch with the EU delegations in their respective countries.
The Brussels program focuses on EU policies and instruments for human rights defenders, access to funding, development of communication skills and awareness of the specific security challenges faced by defenders of human rights. It also includes meetings with MEPs, officials from the European institutions and NGOs based in Brussels. Members also have space for individual advocacy and networking activities.
The training at the Global Human Rights Campus in Venice combines academic teaching on international human rights law, instruments and mechanisms with case studies and provides practical tools to improve the work of human rights defenders in way to bring change to the ground. Speakers include leading academics, representatives of leading human rights NGOs, Sakharov Prize laureates and other human rights professionals. The programme will be organised in person in Brussels and Venice. It may be modified online if health conditions require it.
The Sakharov Fellowship is subject to approval in the annual work programme of DG-EXPO of the European Parliament.
Candidates must have a proven track record of human rights campaigning in an NGO or other organisation or as an individual. They must have a high level of English, sufficient to attend and contribute to discussion groups and seminars in Brussels and Venice.
The selection of scholarships is based on the above criteria and the need to ensure gender balance and the representation of a range of geographic areas and human rights issues.
The scholarship covers round-trip travel from the home country, accommodation in Brussels and Venice, and a daily allowance. Successful applicants will receive confirmation by email no later than 24 February 2025. Unsuccessful applicants will not they will not be informed of the reasons for not being restricted or not being offered a scholarship.

Communication Fellowship 2025

The Club of Rome has established a Communication Fellowship, an annual mentoring program that aims to increase the diversity of voices addressing sustainable development issues and support early-career communication professionals from most countries around the world. The fellowship aims to create a network of passionate Club of Rome communication specialists around the world who can share information and best practices.
Applications for the 2025 Communication Fellowship are now open. The Club of Rome is currently accepting applications for the 2025 Communications Fellowship. The Fellowship is a seven-month mentoring program designed to increase the diversity of voices covering sustainability issues and support early-career communications professionals in most countries around the world. The fellowship will consist of a remote internship, with the successful fellow working from home, and travel to meet with members of the Club of Rome team. The fellowship provides a modest stipend for living expenses and includes work-related travel expenses.
The Communications Fellow will gain experience in communicating complex systems that are intended for non-specialist audiences through a range of platforms, including website, multimedia, and social media. The successful candidate will work directly with the communications team, contributing to a range of tasks including online publishing, media relations, event coverage, multimedia, social media and other communications activities.
Two positions are available and we welcome applications from candidates with a range of experience. We are particularly looking for individuals who are willing to work across all communications channels and who are skilled in producing multimedia content.
The ideal candidate will have:
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in science or journalism, and/or a current or graduate student in a science journalism program.
Some experience writing about systems thinking or sustainability research for non-specialist audiences via blogs, journals, academic websites or other media OR experience producing multimedia content on relevant topics.
Written and oral proficiency in English and a proven ability to understand complex scientific research or systems thinking. Experience or interest in social media, video, photography or other multimedia media.
Alignment with the beliefs and vision of the Club of Rome.
Applicants from all countries are welcome, but priority will be given to citizens or residents of countries from most parts of the world.
