At the Eradication Project, we believe that important environmental stories need to be told. We believe that underrepresented journalists bring critical and fresh perspectives to covering these stories. The Uproot Project Scholarship provides funding for seven journalists to pursue reporting projects over the course of a year. Fellows will receive up to $2,000 to cover travel and reporting expenses and will also receive support from Uproot to pitch their stories to a media outlet, if needed. Fellows’ projects must focus on stories related to one of four categories: (1) environmental justice, (2) climate solutions, (3) water, food, and culture, and (4) science. The projects aim to highlight how the climate crisis and major environmental issues of our time are inextricably linked to other forms of inequality.
Eligibility
The mission of the Uproot Fellowship program is to help underrepresented and early-career climate journalists gain a foothold in our industry. Our definition of “early career” includes, but is not limited to: relatively new environmental/climate journalists, freelancers without full-time editorial experience, recent journalism school graduates, and scientists without traditional journalism training but with solid experience in newsroom and content writing.
Reporting projects must examine an environmental issue in depth in one of four categories: (1) environmental justice, (2) climate solutions, (3) water, food and culture, and (4) science. We are particularly interested in funding stories that are under-reported by the news media or misunderstood by the general public.
The grant is open to stories of any kind: written, audio, video, photography, or a combination of the two. Your reporting can take you anywhere, whether you want to tell a story in your own backyard or halfway around the world. Fellows will also be asked to provide a brief progress report after six months and a brief summary of their experience at the end of their reporting process to share with Uproot.
Budget Guidelines
Funding for this fellowship must directly support the fellows’ reports. These costs may include travel expenses, translation costs, access to records, data analysis, data visualization, etc.
The majority of funds must be used for reporting expenses and the funds must be spent within one year of award selection. Fellows are not required to spend a large portion of their budget on new equipment. Funds cannot be used to reimburse reports that have already been completed. The jury may authorize other types of reimbursement in special cases.
