UNEP-Georgetown Global Environmental and Sustainability Fellowship Program: Building the Capacity of Environmental Lawyers
In 2016, UNEP and Georgetown University Law Center joined forces to develop a Global Environmental and Sustainability Law Fellowship Program to train public sector lawyers from developing countries who work on environmental and sustainability issues related to environmental law, natural resource law, or related areas of law. to ultimately promote the rule of environmental law.
Successful fellows will receive an LL.M in Environmental and Energy Law from the Law Center. Georgetown Law offers more than 60 courses in environmental and energy law and closely related disciplines, ranging from core courses in environmental law, energy law, and natural resource law to specialized seminars in environmental justice, energy law, and environmental law, food, and drug law. , energy trade and the intersection of business, sustainability and human rights, taught by world-renowned professors and practitioners. Upon graduation, students will gain international experience in environmental law and policy with the United Nations by working at UNEP headquarters or in regional offices for three months.
In the new phase of the program, UNEP and Georgetown Law School are now inviting National Focal Points (NFPs) of the Environmental Law Program in Montevideo to nominate candidates via email. The Montevideo Program is UNEP’s flagship program in environmental law.
The program helps cover tuition fees for candidates who would otherwise not be able to afford an LL.M degree focused on environmental law. The fellowship will cover tuition fees, necessary travel and living expenses for the three-month period at UNEP headquarters or regional offices. We strongly recommend that candidates seek an external source of funding for living expenses while in Washington, DC. Program Requirements:
To be eligible for this fellowship, a candidate must:
reside in a developing country;
have the necessary qualifications to practice law in their home country;
be currently employed by a state or local government entity; and
practice environmental law, energy law, natural resources law, or a related legal field.
Fellows must commit to returning to their home country to continue working in public sector environmental law and policy for at least three years. Application Procedure
National Focal Points (NFPs) of the Environmental Law Program in Montevideo are invited to propose candidates by email to unep-montevideo@un.org. Applications should be accompanied by a CV of the candidate, no more than two pages. Each NFP may nominate up to two candidates. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated, and selected candidates will receive an application fee waiver from Georgetown.
Any other interested candidates may apply directly to Georgetown and indicate their interest in the scholarship in their LL.M. application. Applicants applying directly are not eligible for the application fee waiver.
