Are you passionate about transforming the lives of children in Africa? The University of Cambridge’s Research Centre for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) and Education in Sub-Saharan Africa (ESSA), with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, are offering grants of up to $15,000 to support African early childhood development. Early childhood development (ECD) researchers in Central, East, West and Southern Africa.
Context and relevance: This initiative is part of Phase 2 of a project focused on early childhood development. We are continuing our Phase 1 efforts to identify scholars, understand their professional needs, build their research skills, and address the critical challenges faced by the region’s youngest learners.
What do you propose? A total of 20 to 25 grants will support high-impact, policy-relevant research focused on topics involving education and its interaction with one or more of the following: health, nutrition, care, play, or protection of the ‘environment for children of 0 years. at 8 years old. Funding will cover research activities, including costs associated with data collection (if applicable), analysis and dissemination.
The research proposed for funding through this scholarship may also be supported by other financial sources, but such other support must not already have been covered by any of the research costs required by this scholarship.
Target Countries: The target countries are Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. In addition, funding will be available for successful applications from Central, East, West and Southern Africa. Collaborative projects between institutions or countries are encouraged.
Eligibility: African researchers based in Africa, holding a PhD and working in a relevant institution or research unit, such as: a university, a research institute or a research unit of a government department/ministry, are eligible to submit grant applications. Applications should focus on context-specific research relevant to policy and action that addresses key challenges in early childhood development.
