Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, faces some of the world’s most pressing health and development challenges. Among the most important, we must significantly improve maternal, newborn and child health. Despite various interventions over time, the country continues to face some of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world, with morbidity, malnutrition and human development indicators remaining weak. These challenges are closely linked to poverty, limited access to health care, and a suboptimal food system. This Request for Proposal (RFP) by Grand Challenges Nigeria (GCNg) aims to provide bold and innovative solutions to improve maternal, newborn and child health, thereby accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and a brighter, healthier future for all.
Objectives of the Call for Proposals and Funding Opportunities
GCNg seeks to identify and support innovative and scalable ideas and interventions that leverage local contexts to address critical maternal, newborn and child health challenges, prioritizing human health and development. This call for proposals will provide seed funding of up to N60 million per grant for a project implementation period of 12 to 15 months. The final grant amount awarded will be determined based on the specific needs, scope and proposed budget of the project. Applicants are encouraged to submit realistic budget proposals that reflect the actual costs required to achieve their project objectives. A maximum of ten (10) projects will be funded.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligible candidates must be affiliated with registered Nigerian institutions or organizations with a proven track record in the field of maternal, newborn and child health. Projects will be implemented in Nigeria. We encourage applications from local and international collaborations; however, the lead applicant must be Nigerian.
What we are looking for
GCNg will prioritize projects that address a critical issue affecting large populations, have the potential to create sustainable impact, and are designed to be scalable. Proposals should demonstrate active stakeholder engagement to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of proposed interventions.
This call is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, aimed at nurturing a new generation of innovators, improving health outcomes, and fostering sustainable development across the country.
