About the Earth Species Project
The Earth Species Project (ESP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to using AI to address these questions. We believe that the exponential advances we are seeing in AI are opening up new ways of looking at the world and expanding the capacity of humans to learn from other species. We hope that this will contribute significantly to changing the human perspective on how we relate to the rest of nature. The ESP collaborates with biologists and machine learning researchers from leading universities and institutions around the world, and we are honored to be supported by many philanthropists and project groups, including Reid Hoffman, Waverley Street Foundation, Paul G Allen Family Foundation, and the National Geographic Society.
As we continue to grow, we are looking for a talented Research Advocate to lead the external understanding of ESP technology, our research projects, our organizational strategy, and our partnerships. This role is also responsible for managing a group of early adopters. This role is essential to ensuring that our models and tools are not only understood, but adopted and respected by the research community and the wider public. This role will involve translating complex technical concepts and data into easily digestible written and visual content – and in doing so, will help build credibility and convey a clear and strong sense of our brand voice and identity.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills, have a passion for science and technical storytelling, a deep understanding of technology and our research approach, and be comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Connecting research and organizational strategy
Work with research and communications teams to develop a strategy and execution plan to increase adoption of ESP models and tools among end users (ethologists, conservation biologists)
Integrate with the AI team to translate complex research findings into accessible formats, including high-quality written and visual resources. Examples: blog posts, GitHub documentation, grant reports and other research updates, compelling data visualizations, demos and presentations, abstracts, posters, donor materials, website content, social media posts, FAQs, etc.
Work closely with the communications team to align research information with broader outreach strategies.
Collaborate with all departments to improve the timeliness and clarity of internal communications regarding technical updates.
Content Creation and Visual Communication:
Develop accessible and compelling content showcasing ESP research, including technical blogs, user guides, and white papers.
Create simple and aesthetically pleasing technical illustrations to accompany research articles, presentations, and audience materials.
Design and implement (or work with front-end developers to design and develop) intuitive and responsive front-end interfaces that make complex AI results accessible to non-technical users.
Develop and maintain web applications showcasing ESP research, ensuring usability and accessibility for diverse audiences.
Work closely with research and engineering teams to align front-end development with project goals and scientific needs.
External Engagement:
Represent ESP at conferences, webinars and seminars, sharing information about our work and advocating for its adoption in the wider research community.
Work closely with the Impact team to support the development of relationships with key partners, collaborators and stakeholders to strengthen ESP’s network and impact.
You will bring:
Strong technical expertise in machine learning, data science, NLP or a similar field, with the ability to understand and explain fundamental concepts of AI and bioacoustics.
A demonstrated ability to think outside the box and design creative solutions that make complex technologies accessible and engaging.
Strong track record of effective scientific communication in multiple written and visual formats (demonstrated through portfolio) to technical and non-technical audiences.
Proficient in documentation and technical content creation tools (e.g. GitHub Pages, Markdown, Figma or similar).
Demonstrated ability to manage and engage technical communities, including beta testers or contributors. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, project prioritization and planning skills, and ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Impeccable attention to detail and eye for written style and visual design.
Demonstrated ability to write, revise and edit for grammar, style, voice, technical accuracy and consistency.
Proficient in software tools (including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as publishing content through standard social media platforms, including LinkedIn, X and BlueSky.
Experience developing highly polished products with visual design elements, such as illustrations for slides, posters and social media posts, independently or with the support of a designer. Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a rapidly changing environment.
Desired Qualifications:
Advanced degree (Ph.D. / Master) in a computer science or communications field.
Deep knowledge of front-end development technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
Experience creating interactive visualizations or tables to represent complex data sets.
Knowledge of UI/UX design principles and best practices.
Experience in ethology, bioacoustics, sociobiology, or a related scientific field
Interest and passion for the natural world
Proficient in visual design tools such as Adobe, Keynote, Canva, Figma
Knowledge of the open source community and related tools.
